What is a Trixie bet?
A Trixie is a full-cover bet on three selections, made up of four bets: three doubles and one treble. The beauty of it is that you don't need all three to win — as soon as any two of your horses oblige, one of the doubles pays out and you get a return. If all three win, all four bets land and it really adds up.
Because it covers itself, a Trixie costs four unit stakes rather than one (a £1 Trixie is £4), but it takes a lot of the all-or-nothing sting out of a treble. That trade — more outlay for a much better chance of a return — is why I use it for my three value standouts each day.
How I pick them: I take the three horses my ratings separate most clearly from their races, at value odds of roughly 2.5–4.0 (never short favourites). In my testing, selecting on that rating-gap returned a small profit both in-sample and out-of-sample and cashed on about a quarter of days — which is why the Trixie is the one multiple I track as a possible second edge, honestly, alongside the Nap.
